Recognise when a toothache needs dental assessment or emergency help.
Pain is a reason to investigate
Toothache can have several causes, including decay, a damaged tooth, a filling problem, gum disease or infection. The location and strength of pain do not identify the cause reliably. Tell the dentist when it began, whether it comes and goes, and what makes it worse.
Arrange a dental assessment
Seek dental advice for pain lasting more than two days, pain that is not settling with pain relief, or pain accompanied by fever, a bad taste, pain on biting or cheek swelling. A consultation can establish which investigations and treatment options are relevant.
Know the emergency signs
Swelling around the eye or neck, or mouth or neck swelling that interferes with breathing, swallowing or speaking, needs emergency medical help. Do not wait for a routine WhatsApp reply in those circumstances. The website does not provide an emergency response service.
