Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Bleeding gums deserve attention even when your teeth do not hurt.

Bleeding gums deserve attention even when your teeth do not hurt.

01

A sign to discuss

Bleeding during brushing, flossing or eating can be a sign of gum disease. Gums may also look red, swollen or feel sore. These symptoms are a reason to arrange a dental check, rather than assuming that bleeding is a normal part of cleaning.

02

The assessment guides care

Plaque build-up is an important cause of gum disease. The dentist can examine the gums and explain cleaning and oral hygiene options. More advanced disease may require treatment beyond a routine clean. Dr. Abdullah offers cleaning and polishing; this does not imply that every gum condition can be managed with that service.

03

Describe any additional changes

Mention persistent bad breath, receding gums, loose adult teeth or swelling as well as bleeding. Severely swollen or painful gums and loose teeth warrant urgent dental advice. At the visit, ask what the findings mean and whether additional care or referral is appropriate.
