Prepare for an assessment of a chipped, cracked or broken tooth.
Arrange a dental examination
A chipped, broken or cracked tooth should be assessed by a dentist. The visible size of the missing piece does not tell you how much of the tooth is affected. Describe how the injury happened and whether there is pain or sensitivity when contacting the practice.
Keep a fragment if available
If you find the broken piece, keep it in milk or saliva in a container and bring it to the dentist. In some cases a fragment can be reattached. Keeping it does not guarantee that reattachment will be suitable for your particular tooth.
Repair depends on the damage
Possible options include reattaching the fragment, a filling or a crown. A more severely damaged tooth with exposed nerves may need root canal treatment. Ask which parts of the tooth are involved and why a particular repair is recommended before agreeing to a plan.
