A practical question about keeping fluoride on the teeth.
Spit out the excess
After brushing with fluoride toothpaste, spit out the excess toothpaste rather than immediately rinsing with water. Rinsing washes away the concentrated fluoride left on the teeth. This advice is part of everyday oral hygiene and does not replace an individual plan for a particular dental condition.
Timing and technique still matter
Brush for about two minutes twice a day, including last thing at night, and clean all tooth surfaces. Both manual and electric brushes can be effective when used thoroughly. Cleaning between the teeth is also important; the dentist can help you choose a suitable method.
Ask about your own routine
If you use mouthwash, it is generally used at a different time from brushing rather than to rinse away the toothpaste. Bring questions about brush size, interdental cleaning or any difficulty reaching teeth to your visit. A cleaning appointment can be a useful time to review your routine.
