Understand the purpose of early aftercare instructions after removal of a tooth.
The early clot has a role
A blood clot forms in the tooth socket after extraction. Disturbing it can interfere with healing. Common early instructions therefore include avoiding rinsing, spitting or touching the socket during the first twenty-four hours. Follow the instructions given for your own procedure, especially if they differ.
Take care while the mouth is numb
Local anaesthetic may leave the area numb for several hours. Hot food or drinks can burn a numb mouth, and eating carelessly can lead to biting the lip or tongue. Ask the treating clinician when and how to eat and clean safely after your extraction.
Know who to contact
Before leaving, make sure you have the aftercare instructions and know where to seek help for persistent bleeding, severe pain or concerning swelling. Recovery varies with the procedure. This page explains why care is needed; it does not replace the treating clinician’s instructions or provide a personal recovery timetable.
